Best Christmas Pageant Ever
by Barbara Robinson returns to the Contois Auditorium stage in Burlington's City Hall for a five-show, two-weekend run, every December.
Pageant brings the expected warmth of the holiday season with a delightful twist. Anyone who has ever been involved with the annual Christmas pageant at school or at church will recognize the trials of Grace Bradley as she "inherits" the task of directing this year's production. Most of us, though, have never had to deal with the likes of the Herdmans--undoubtedly the meanest, nastiest, most inventively awful kids in the entire history of the whole wide world.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and the newly added HollyDaze Pre-Show Sing-Along together features a cast of over 35 children and 10 adults. Numerous sets of talented parents and their children will share the stage this year. Some ensemble members are making their 2nd and 3rd appearances in this holiday classic.

Kid's Day
is an event specifically for children. It starts with the parade, which starts around 9:30 in the morning. And best of all, most of the events are free. If you want to be in the parade you should show up at Edmunds School on Main Street by 9:00, for the line up. You can decorate your stroller, bike, or wagon, and join the fun!
Traffic is stopped on Main Street in Burlington this morning for a parade. It isn't a national holiday - but a celebration of kids. It was a day dedicated to the kids. All kinds of kids: from two legged "older" kids, to four legged pets-- dressed to impress Some commercial kid-favorites were on-hand ... not to mention some unique mascots. The parade led to a waterfront carnival. At the waterfront you will find many free events for children until about 3:30 in the afternoon.
Though arts and crafts -- and sometimes-even goo -- parents were thankful for what kids got out of the day.

That move forced them to hold the performance the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, leaving many alumni to fear that their old classmates won't make it to town in time to attend.

Advance ticket sales for Burlington's annual First Night
celebration on New Year's Eve are strong, First Night Executive Director Matt Rizzo said Sunday. About 8,000 First Night buttons had been sold by Sunday afternoon, slightly ahead of projections, Rizzo said. First Night tickets come in the form of lapel buttons. The buttons allow festival-goers into any First Night event they choose. Events at the Flynn MainStage are an exception: A free, additional ticket is needed. First Night is Burlington's annual New Year's Eve party. Similar events are held in dozens of cities across the nation. Burlington's First Night features a wide variety of entertainment events at 25 venues scattered around downtown
Burlington. First Night on Tuesday is the city's 20th. Events will run from noon Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday. Rizzo said a large proportion of First Night buttons would be sold today and Tuesday. He said many people walked into First Night's Burlington offices Sunday seeking buttons. Sales were also heavy at a "Button- mobile"
Balloon festival has been canceled.
Citing two years of dodgy weather, officials at the Champlain Valley Exposition canceled this year's Vermont Balloon and Music Festival, traditionally held the first weekend in June.
The festival, which began in 2003, featured about 40 hot-air balloons, a carnival, specialty vendors and concerts. After two years of agreeable weather, conditions kept the balloons grounded for most of the last two festivals. Consequently, attendance suffered, according to the exposition.
"There's always a possibility we could bring it back," said Steve Mease, spokesman for the exposition. "We're just not doing it right now."
Other nearby summer balloon festivals include the Quechee Balloon and Craft Festival on June 13-15; the Stoweflake Hot Air Balloon Festival in Stowe, July 11-13; and The International Balloon Festival in St. Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Aug. 9-17.

First night has entertainment for young and old.
The event is popular with families, as children and adults can partake in the arts, crafts, and entertainment of the day. But the day has long been short on events for teens. That will change this year with an alternative music show at memorial auditorium called Buzz Fest.
Jim Lockridge of Bigheavyworld.com told us: "Their intention was to make something happen that essentially the teens and youth of the area could really appreciate in the truest sense, I mean really get into."
And getting them interested is the first step toward keeping them away from drugs and alcohol on the biggest party night of the year. The event is substance and smoke free, so organizers and health organizations hope it shows kids that they can have fun without those vices.
Hundreds dived into the near-freezing Lake Champlain.
Saturday morning was less than balmy, but for ...about 600..., it turned out to be a good day for a plunge. The swimmers -- whose sanity was much debated throughout the morning -- were participating in the seventh annual Penguin Plunge, a fund-raiser for Special Olympics Vermont.
The air temperature was in the low 40s when the first plungers took to the water at 11 a.m. The lake temperature was 34 degrees. About 1,500 cheering spectators lined the shore to watch.
Each plunger needed to raise at least in sponsorships to earn the privilege to leap into a nearly freezing lake. Event organizer Hilary Casillas said the goal this year was to raise ,000. That would account for about one-quarter of the yearly budget for Special Olympics Vermont, a year-round training and competition program for people with developmental disabilities, Casillas said.
Irish Eyes Are Smilin' In Burlington
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- It's time for the wearin'-o-the-green again, with the start of the 7th Annual Burlington Irish Heritage festival.
Organizers kicked off the weeklong event by temporarily renaming Church Street "Burke Street," in honor of the city's longest serving mayor, Irishman James Burke.
The festivities will include Irish dancing, storytelling and theater.
Organizers said the festival is all about getting away from the stereotypes of green beer.
"As Americans, we all celebrate our diversity," festival organizer Rob Hale said. "And as we lead into St. Patrick's day, Irish Americans, especially, like to reflect on the positive impact that Irish Americans have had on this country."
The festival wraps up Sunday, St. Patrick's Day, with the annual concert at Burlington's Flynn Theater. -- end --

Model trains span the years at Fairgrounds.
The Youngs' enthusiasm was typical of the excitement at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction on Saturday, when the Northwestern Vermont Model Railroading Society held its annual show. The show is the society's main fund-raising event to support its Essex clubhouse where it maintains a scale railroad. The event, the biggest of its kind in Vermont, drew about 1,500 people, show manager Ron Piro said. ... It's also something that seemed to excite as many adults as children Saturday. In the exhibition hall, grade-school boys jostled with septuagenarians for a good view of small trains speeding through tiny towns and green valleys dotted with miniature animals. ... Tom Gallagher brought one of his layouts with him from Hyde Park and was encouraging young and old to push the start button that set his train off on a track that disappeared into a tunnel

Over five hundred people took a dip into Lake Champlain
this morning to raise money for the Vermont Special Olympics.
Temperatures were at -6 F, but with the wind chill, it felt more like -27 F. The water, on the other hand, was at 32 F.
People psyched themselves up for the plunge by jumping around, yelling, and warmed up by jogging.
Organizers hope to raise about ,000 in the eighth annual event. Funds will help pay for athlete participation in Special Olympic events.
Typically, athletes compete in one to four sports a year at an average cost of .
Currently, there are forty local special Olympic programs in Vermont.

Reggae Fest is Returning to the Burlington area.
After a year-long hiatus, Reggae returns to the Champlain Valley. Last year, organizers cancelled the Vermont Reggae Festival over concerns that it was growing too large to control.
This summer, the concert is reborn and will be hosted by the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction.
Organizers have made a number of changes to diminish the free-for-all atmosphere that the event has gained.
In the past, it has been known for rowdy crowds and open drug use.
Those changes include heightened security, no on-site camping and tickets will be limited to just 8,000.
Alfred Snidel, from the Festival Committee, said, "we want this festival to be for people who love reggae music and not another opportunity to party." ... Tickets go on sale on Thursday, March 28, for through the Flynn Theater box office.
The event will be held July 27 from noon to 9 pm and will feature Third World, Marcia Griffiths and Benaiah with Dean Frasier and Nambo.
Reggae Fest is Returning to the Burlington area.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday for the 16th Vermont Reggae Festival, which returns after last year's hiatus with a July 27 concert at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction.
Confirmed artists include Third World, Marcia Griffiths, the Abyssinians, Benaiah with Dean Frasier and Nambo. Other artists will be confirmed within the next several weeks, the Committee for the Vermont Reggae Festival, a non-profit organization in Burlington, announced Monday.
Previously held in Hardwick, the festival took 2001 off after a 15-year run. Organizers said at the time that the event had strayed from its mission of linking music with social activism, but officials in Hardwick said mounting crowds -- in excess of 20,000 two years ago -- had put a strain on the village, with residents complaining of camping on private property, drug consumption and fireworks use.
This year, only 8,000 tickets will be available and there will be no on-site camping.
Santa is visiting to kick off the Church Street Marketplace's holiday party
, replete with parade and tree-lighting ceremony.
The parade starts at noon in front of City Hall and ends at Burlington Town Center, where children can follow Santa into the mall and lay their holiday wish lists on him.
Then, at 5:30 p.m., the Open Stage Theater Company helps ring in the holiday season with a performance on the Marketplace's top block. The show culminates at 6:05 p.m. with the illumination of 100,000 lights on Church Street, a post-Thanksgiving Day tradition.
Spring Fest concert
is a culmination of a three day event that will feature Spike Lee among others. The Saturday concert is designed to be a drug free alternative to the April 20th marijuana tradition, with police posted at all entrances.
We may have, as we have in past concerts, we may have k-9's at the entrances," UVM Police Chief Gary Margolis says. "And we of course are looking for a number of things including video equipment and we don't want people to bring glass bottles in, normal security event type management issues."
The show on Saturday will be headlined by Vida Blue, a band with Phish Keyboard Paige McConnell. A UVM student ID or a ticket is required for entry into the show, but UVM police are bracing for possible party crashers.
Students presented work at annual Schoolhouse science fair.
Following a brainstorming session of possibilities for study six weeks ago, the 54 students in grades kindergarten through six each chose a topic to research and present through written work, visual art and a 3-D model at the fair.
Because it's a co-op, each parent has also committed to teach, or arrange for someone else to teach, one five-week course during the school year. Courses designed to complement the science theme of world ecosystems were presented as children conducted their own research.
At The Schoolhouse, students are grouped into four classes -- called Alphas, Omegas, Taus and Sages -- based on their developmental ability rather than age. Older children are encouraged to help younger ones whenever possible, and problem-solving is a skill that children are encouraged to practice on their own.

The Spirits of the Tower Haunted Tour
takes place on Halloween night at Ethan Allen Park in Burlington. The Burlington Parks and Recreation put on the event.
The first haunted tour attracted 1,500 people looking to enjoy a spooky night of fun at each. The line for the tour wrapped around the entire park. Vendors are stretched across the park with snacks and activities. The event supplied apple cider and glow sticks at affordable prices.
The tour began on a path in the woods where two ghosts greeted the crowd. Further along the walk, piercing screams were heard as witches, zombies, and dead prisoners jumped out from their hiding spots.
Scenes were performed along the trail, such as witches hoping to make a brew with the crowd as the main ingredient, and a person buried alive asking for help. There are cages with people trapped inside, as well as wolves and ghouls grabbing people as they walk by.
