The erstwhile Sweet Tomatoes Trattoria is rechristened Three Tomatoes Trattoria, thanks to a trademark dispute with a California restaurant chain. Beginning April 1, signs at the restaurant's locations in Burlington, Rutland and Lebanon, N.H., were hastily revised, menus and letterheads were replaced and the restaurateurs ran advertisements alerting customers to the changes. ... The trouble with trademarks dates back to 1990. Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp. of San Diego applied for a trademark for the Sweet Tomatoes name in March 1990, and the Vermont restaurant filed a similar application six months later, Meyers said. Not the Co-op?! I'd like to share some numbers with you; 57, 57, 58 71, 51, 52, & 75 .Of course this data is the % favorable for the Shaw's proposal in wards 1 through 7, respectively. The city average was 61.6% favorable. Even though this was only a single-issue ballot 13.4% of the eligible Burlington voters, voted. Before you conclude that voter turn out of 13+% is insignificant, let me share some other information with you. In the spring city elections of 98 with a full slate of issues only 12.8% and 7.7% of the eligible voters in 2 wards voted in the election of the councilors. Sugar Moon My father Niles is a sugarmaker and his father Oliver was a sugarmaker. We have his old 2ft by 4ft flat pan hanging in the back of our sugarhouse along with many other artifacts of Vermont's agricultural past. The tradition goes back farther than that. I am of French Canadian decent and history tells us about the conquest and colonization of this continent by the Europeans. The Spanish slaughtered the native people, the English pushed them away, and the French embraced them. This said the French Canadians were the first of the European settlers that made sugar. While many of the early French settlers came to trade furs and convert souls those who attempted to live of the land quickly found themselves mimicking native ways.
