Originally designed for vaudeville -- with the largest proscenium in the state, a sophisticated fly system, sloped floor seating, good acoustics, and central downtown location -- the theatre's focus shifted quickly to film as "talkies" became the rage. The Flynn operated as a movie theatre for almost 50 years. In the early 1970s, Lyric Theatre – Burlington's community theater group – rediscovered the Flynn's live theater capacity and used it for their own performances. Later, Lyric members helped spearhead a group of interested citizens who raised money to purchase the Flynn and create a live performing arts center.
