Blodgett Oven Co. has outgrown its lakeside plant
and plans to move its 170 employees to another location in the area, said Gary Mick, the company's president.
The move is necessary because double-digit growth in sales over the past five years means the company must leave its 60-year-old plant, Mick said.
Mick and Director of Operations Dan Coolbeth said Friday that Blodgett has become cramped in its 79,000-square-foot space.
"We've tweaked it all we can," Coolbeth said.
Mick said the company considered upgrading and adding to the space but the cost was prohibitive.
Blodgett Ovens has been sold to the nation's biggest pizza oven company.
The Middleby Corporation paid Blodgett's parent company, Maytag, million for the 150-year old commercial oven company. The deal for Blodgett has been in the works for awhile, and Friday the sale was completed. Blodgett employs about 700 people at its plants in Burlington and Shelburne. Last month, 29 workers were laid off due to tough economic times. -- end --

-- Effective visual communication depends on two things: content and context.
Content is your brand message: what needs to be said, and what needs to
be heard. Context is the messenger: the interface between your product and your customer. It's the logo, the package, the website, the ad, the brand identity.
The right message in the wrong context won't be heard. Have one without the other, and your message will fall flat. Good design satisfies both. Simply.
Dynapower Corp., an electrical equipment manufacturer
in South Burlington, is poised to add as many as 40 employees during the next several months.
Dynapower nearly doubled in size after buying the company's top competitor, Rapid Power Technologies in Connecticut. The sale was completed in September.
The deal makes Dynapower the leading manufacturer of custom DC power systems, President Peter Pollak said. Employment will be available in an array of jobs including manufacturing and engineering, he said.
The Connecticut operation is being moved to Vermont along with several key employees, Pollak said. Dynapower has more than 100 employees. Company officials declined to give a specific number.
Dynapower manufactures and sells power systems for industrial use, including in the steel, copper, aluminum, metal finishing and water treatment industries. The company was founded in Michigan in 1963 and moved to Vermont in 1991.
Hazelett Strip-Casting Corporation

The company occupies 85,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space on the shores of Lake Champlain in Colchester, Vermont, U.S.A. Its 145 employees are engaged in research, engineering, design, and manufacture of new casters and spare parts for over 60 customers in 26 countries. The company's engineering and manufacturing resources are available 24 hours a day to respond to customer needs.
Hazelett is an equipment manufacturer, not a metals producer. Its twin-belt type continuous strip and bar metal casting machines are installed in customers' plants in combination with other processing equipment such as furnaces and rolling mills. Most of Hazelett’s customers produce semi-fabricated products such as aluminum sheet and copper rod in these plants.
How is an architect different from a lawyer?
No, this isn't another lawyer joke; it's a question that Michael Wisniewski askes as he explains what he says is a cornerstone of the architect's role in society.
A lawyer, or an accountant, is just supposed to serve the interests of the client, he says. "As architects we have a different stewardship than that. We also have a responsibility to the greater community not just to satisfy the client's needs but to create patterns in the surrounding community that will make the community better."
Wisniewski's partner in the Burlington architectural firm of Duncan-Wisniewski, Bob Duncan echoes that philosophy. "We strive to do the best we can with the client's money, their goals, their plans, but we also hope to inspire them to do more, to put a better face forward to the community or address some other need at the same time for example, to create a certain number of housing units but also create a sense of community."
Kelley Marketing Group,
located at Champlain College, has been helping nonprofits with advice for 20 years.
In a monthly meeting at the Hauke Building, the campus' newest addition, six or seven professional marketers and the program organizer, Professor Jay McKee, sit down with a representative of a nonprofit for an informal look at marketing strategy. For an hour or more, they will help that organization with suggestions for putting its marketing house in order.
Shelburne Museum was the most recent nonprofit to seek the Kelley group's advice.
... This service, named after a former marketing professor and business division chairman at Champlain College, Michael R. Kelley who died in 1989, has attracted many marketing professionals since its inception.
... McKee, who teaches marketing, has kept the group going since the late 1980s. He said the interest among marketers in helping nonprofits stems from a sense of community.

Lane Press,
Many of Vermont's public companies squeezed out impressive gains
in the stock markets during 2001, even as the markets overall performed poorly.
The state's electric utilities and banks did especially well.
Company restructuring and state-approved rate increases combined to propel the stock price of the state's two largest electric utilities.
The two largest Vermont-based banking firms -- Merchants Bancshares and Chittenden Corp. -- also pulled off strong returns. Their stock prices increased 48.4 percent and 13.8 percent, respectively. ... Green Mountain Power Corp. had a bad 2000 and made up for it in 2001. The utility scraped past looming bankruptcy after it reduced its staff and refocused. Then, the Vermont Public Service Board awarded the utility a rate increase in January 2001.

South Burlington firm has cut president's position.
The president of a South Burlington mail order and e-commerce fulfillment company resigned as the business refocuses in the
post-Sept. 11 recession.
Karen Makowski, who came to Resolution four years ago, decided to leave when she and Chief Executive Bill Schubart decided
the company could not afford two top executives.
Resolution Inc. takes and fills orders such as videos and books for multimedia clients such as CBS and the New York Times.
After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the phones at Resolution stopped for about three weeks as the company's customers ran news
instead of documentaries, said Schubart, also the company's founder.
"I was really getting worried," Schubart said, about watching the sales of the company stagnate. For 2001, he expects Resolution to bring in about million in sales, which will be either about even or slightly up from the previous year.
The 98-year-old South Burlington printer, The Lane Press,
announced Thursday it would cut hours by 20 percent for about half of its 400 workers in a voluntary program with the state Department of Employment and Training.
No layoffs were announced.
The cutback is in response to declines of about 12 percent in advertising revenues of its customers, Robert Morris, vice president of human resources at Lane Press, said Thursday. Lane Press prints about 250 magazines and other publications.
Lane Press will take part in Employment and Training's Short Time Compensation Program in which employees agree to work four days per week and receive unemployment checks for the balance of the work schedule at a reduced rate. ... The company expects 175 to 200 workers to sign up for the program, which is being offered to workers who make the printing plates and who bind the magazines, as well as some press room and other employees, he said.
The city of Burlington may lose of one of its oldest employers.
Blodgett Oven announced recently that it has outgrown its location on Lakeside Avenue, on the waterfront.
Blodgett has been a fixture in Burlington for 160 years. Its home on the waterfront is a prime location. Since the company was bought seven years ago, it just about doubled its business. Blodgett makes commercial ovens that are a standard of the restaurant industry.
In February, 2003, the CEO at Middleby Corp., Blodgett's parent company, Selim Bassoul, said, "We are here to stay." Blodgett had recovered from a downturn and would be adding employees, he told reporters at the time. His statement still stands, but with one major change. Blodgett needs larger quarters
The G.S. Blodgett Corp. in Burlington laid off 75
of its Vermont workers Friday. That makes roughly 104 job cuts in just over two months at the commercial ovenmaker.
The cuts Friday were meant to eliminate redundant functions at the company's Vermont operations and at The Middleby Corp., which bought Blodgett in December, said David Baker, vice president and chief financial officer of Middleby. The continuing softening of the economy -- and specifically within the hospitality and food service industries, was also a factor in the cuts, Baker said.
After the 75 layoffs, Blodgett will employ about 225 people in its manufacturing facilities in Vermont. Blodgett, which has had a presence in Burlington since 1848, also has sites in Concord, N.H., and a distribution center in the United Kingdom.
The company has had its share of ups and downs within the past year. In March, Blodgett announced plans to build a 200,000-square-foot facility in Burlington as part of the proposed Innovation Center of Vermont.
The upbeat mood can be felt on Blodgett's manufacturing
floor, where we watched the company's stainless steel ovens being prepared for shipping. The company was purchased by commercial oven-maker Middleby in December 2001. Back then it was troubled and widely rumored to be on the verge of closing its Burlington plant. ... Bassoul invited Mayor Peter Clavelle, P-Burlington, and the news media to hear the good economic news. By introducing new products and eliminating unsuccessful ones, Blodgett is prospering and expanding its operations world-wide.
... Although Blodgett is not expected to expand within the near future, the company is developing a partnership with the New England Culinary Institute that will promote NECI world-wide. And Blodgett itself will resume a practice of bringing its customers to town.

When Peter Asch took over the family soap business 1996
When Peter Asch took over the family soap business 1996 he took a huge risk. He jettisoned most of the company.
He decided to focus on one thing -- making specialty soap.
No more gift baskets. No more bath gel. No more hotel shampoo. Just soap.
... That was six years ago. The move came just as the specialty soap market was taking off.
Now Asch, 40, is looking ahead to a year with as much as 40 percent growth. At a time when layoffs are the news of the day,
Twincraft Soap Company is hiring.
...
Twincraft was founded in 1972 by twin brothers Bob and David Asch in Montreal. They set up a factory to make soap for Avon. The cosmetics company guaranteed the twins ,000 in business a year, Asch said.
In 1978 they came to Vermont and opened a factory in Winooski.
With an annual budget of ,000, Redmond and his staff
of six ensure the Marketplace lives up to the founders' vision to be a "unique and thriving downtown pedestrian mall by creating an experience that attracts visitors to shop, dine and explore."
Supported by fees charged to property owners, the Marketplace staff, in a nutshell, maintains and markets the street.
To sustain its vitality over the course of the last 21 years, the Marketplace has had to meet several challenges head-on, tackling tough issues like suburban sprawl, safety and security, parking, rising costs and a sluggish economy. Redmond credits collaboration for its success.
