Blind or visually impaired Vermonters can now use new voice guidance technology to operate the automated bank machine at Chittenden Bank in Burlington. Chittenden Bank will invest $250,000 during the next five years to equip 35 of its 68 ATMs in its network. Branches in Brattleboro, Montpelier and Rutland will install the system by the end of March. Each machine costs on average $7,500. Blind people can obtain a headset from Chittenden Bank along with their ATM card. The headset will provide voice directions for each modified machine. About 10,000 people in Vermont are blind or visually impaired. The Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired has been working with Vermont banks to upgrade the state's ATMs. Chittenden Bank is the first to complete an upgrade.
